Sloan Support Weekly Recap July 9, 2016

by Lucas Veale, Assumption, IL

Recent rains and cooler weather in central Illinois have really helped the corn crop as it at (or near) pollination.   I have heard of a few small pockets of wind damage but not wide spread at all.  Soybeans have nearly closed the canopy on 30” rows and look to be off to a good start.  I have seen and heard of some folks digging out the row crop cultivators from the back corner of the shed to cultivate some beans with some stubborn water hemp pressure.  Crops overall look pretty good in our area with a few pockets here and there that are showing the effects of some tougher growing conditions.

There is a lot of buzz in the area about the Exactemerge Planter Retrofit.  Customers are looking for ways to help save some money by upgrading their current planters to the new technology available with the Exactemerge row unit.  The seed spacing is amazing and with an optimum corn planting window of less than 5 days in many areas this year, growers are seeing the value in getting over more acres in a day without sacrificing seed placement.  We also have seen the benefit of hydraulic downforce systems to maintain seed depth when using these machines at higher speeds.  You can learn more about these retrofit kits by clicking here.

RTK signal accuracy is also generating a lot of interest as growers are making multiple passes after planting.  Planting, Post-emerge application of N, as well as weed control are the main drivers for this as they can maintain hands free steering in standing crop.  Late season fungicide is also an excellent use of this technology.  Year over year repeat-ability really opens some doors not available with other signal levels.  You can learn more about the benefits of RTK network by clicking here.

Our planter meter test stands have been running strong as growers are taking advantage of our post season planter inspections to get their machines ready to go for next year before they put them away.   You can learn more about the importance of seed meter testing and proper storage by clicking here.

Jared and Austin have been working hard to get all of our data service customers data corrected and printed.  We still have a few customers that still need to turn in their data so would encourage any that still have not brought it in to do so soon so we can get the Harvest Variety Locator Files set up in plenty of time for fall harvest.  You can click here to learn more about our data management services.

We have sold some new Starfire 6000 receivers to growers wanting to take advantage of the longer RTK Extend period and the new SF3 signal.  We still have some new Starfire 3000 receivers in stock which are a great value for growers that have needs that can be met by SF1 or are not in a sketchy RTK signal area.  You can learn more about the SF 6000 receiver by clicking here.

Keep an eye out for our upcoming combine clinic dates or check with your local Sloan Implement location for their specific clinic dates.

We have sold several drones lately as growers/seedsmen are wanting to assess crop in a more efficient manner.  They can identify trouble spots faster and easier than before and can then spend some of the saved time and effort focusing on determining causes and remedies for the troubled areas.  You can learn more about our Drone packages in a previous post by Jared Wheeler by clicking here.

Shared Coverage Now Available Through JD Link

by Jared Wheeler, Assumption, IL

Now you can pair machines in the same field to make the coverage map more accurate.  If one planter or sprayer covers the headlands, then that information will be sent over to the other machine so that the swath control will shut off the sections on the headlands or point rows. Shared coverage will also be useful when you have multiple combines in the same field.  In addition, you will be able to share AB lines for AutoTrac.  The one-time machine sync activation is $1495 per machine.  The coverage can be transferred from one machine to the other using JDLink Connect or machine sync radios.

Pneumatic Closing Wheels from John Deere

by Josh Zuck, Lanark, IL

In mid-January, John Deere introduced pneumatic closing available for the 2016 planting season.  As of now, these will only fit 2016 ExactEmerge planters.  Deere plans to add more models to the lineup in 2017.

Adjustments are made from the cab on your 2630 display. You can preset up to 20 different settings based on your ground conditions.  With the manual adjust closing wheels, it can take up to 5 min to adjust a 24 row planter.  With the pneumatic, that time can be taken down to 10 seconds.  Adjustments can be made on the fly with the press of a button.  The pneumatic closing wheels will be able to be set up in 2 sections.  Recommendations are center 4 rows as 1 sections, then the outer 10 rows on each wing as a 2nd section.  This will allow you to put more pressure on the center where the weight is carried and should help to close the seed trench.  There is also a pressure feedback sensor to let you know how the closing wheels are  performing.

Why pneumatic closing wheels? One advantage is more uniform emergence.  Uniform emergence is a 10 to 18 bu / acre factor. There is also 76% less variance in closing the trench than manual adjust.  You can now take control over your ground conditions even more. Contact any of our Sloan Implement locations for more info.

Frequency Change on StarFire iTC and 3000 GPS Receivers

by Jared Wheeler, Assumption, IL

It is important to make sure that your StarFire receivers are up to date before you head to the field to avoid loss of correction signal.  The new correction frequency is now 1545.9675.  It was changed to minimize the potential for interference from other agencies and industries.  You will need software version 3.73H or later on StarFire iTC receivers or 2.00R or later of StarFire 3000 receivers for this change to happen automatically with no interruptions. You can download the latest software by clicking here.  You can also manually change this number by going to the StarFire icon on your monitor and selecting the “Setup” tab at the top and changing the number in the “Correction Freq” box.  You may have to uncheck the “Default” box first before it will allow you make this change.
